If you’re like me, you’ll agree that Christmas really is the best time of the year. Everyone is in good spirits, the pubs (and beaches) start filling up, and everyone is getting in the Christmas spirit.

The only downside though, especially for a recruiter, is that the Christmas break always leads to the dreaded ‘down period’. It comes to the point where clients will put a hold on hiring, and candidates will put a hold on their job search. To an extent, I understand why this happens, but at the same time, surely it could be avoided?

If you’re a company who a have a strong pipeline of projects for the new year, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to snatch the top talent above your competitors. Whilst everyone else is enjoying the silly season, you can be interviewing and offering candidates in November & December and getting them lined up to start in the new year. Won’t you feel much better enjoying your mince pies (or maybe prawns) on Christmas day, knowing that when you’re back in the office in January, you’ve got a new starter ready to get cracking on your projects?

As for candidates, if you haven’t had the best of years, this is your chance for a new start and to line up the perfect role for the new year. The thought of searching for a new job can be quite stressful at times, so why not secure a dream job before Christmas, and then well and truly enjoy your break before a fresh start in January!

Granted, I’ll be spending more time in the sunshine enjoying a few cold ones over the ‘silly season’… but whilst I’m in the office I’ll be trying to turn the down period into a, well, not so down period!

Merry Christmas one and all :)
